Yet, the se five fundamental theories oflanguage leaming cannot be totalIy divorced from each other, for "theobjectives of second language learning are not necessarily entirely de-termined by natiye language competence inevitably serves as a foil aga-inst which to set second language leaming. These five basic theories are, furthermore, very much complemen-tary to each other, serving different types of learners or representingvarious cases of language leaming.

Historically John B. Watson is recognized as the father of behaviorism. Behavioral psychology in general believes that all actions of humans and animals are learned behaviors which can be learned and unlearned. It was Ivan Pavlov who investigated classical conditioning with his experiment using dogs: he rang a bell every time he fed the dogs, teaching them to associate the sound of the bell with food. As a result the dogs salivated every time the bell rang, whether there was food or not.
