In this study, we demonstrate an interesting relationship between simple harmonic motion and uniform circular motion trough a simple experiment. The experiment requires a low cost-easily found materials and free software, Tracker.

Simple Harmonic Motion -- background material

In mechanics and physics , simple harmonic motion is a special type of periodic motion where the restoring force on the moving object is directly proportional to the object's displacement magnitude and acts towards the object's equilibrium position. It results in an oscillation which, if uninhibited by friction or any other dissipation of energy , continues indefinitely. Simple harmonic motion can serve as a mathematical model for a variety of motions, but is typified by the oscillation of a mass on a spring when it is subject to the linear elastic restoring force given by Hooke's law. The motion is sinusoidal in time and demonstrates a single resonant frequency. Other phenomena can be modeled by simple harmonic motion, including the motion of a simple pendulum , although for it to be an accurate model, the net force on the object at the end of the pendulum must be proportional to the displacement and even so, it is only a good approximation when the angle of the swing is small; see small-angle approximation. Simple harmonic motion can also be used to model molecular vibration as well. Simple harmonic motion provides a basis for the characterization of more complicated periodic motion through the techniques of Fourier analysis.

To explain above statement:- Consider a ball tied to a thread and moving in a circular path such a way it appears to be in circular motion for a person who is observing it from top view or who is standing in the same plane as we are. But it appears to be SHM if somebody is standing in the same plane of motion. In the above figure we can see that a reference point P ' moving with uniform circular motion in a reference circle of radius A. Its projection P on the x-axis executes simple harmonic motion. SHM is the projection of uniform circular motion on the diameter of the circle in which the SHM takes place. Problem:- In the given figuresit corresponds to two circular motions. The radius of the circle, the period of revolution, the initial position, and the sense of revolution i.

The learning objectives in this section will help your students master the following standards:. In addition, the High School Physics Laboratory Manual addresses content in this section in the lab titled: Circular and Rotational Motion, as well as the following standards:. Ask students to give examples of circular motion. Review linear acceleration. In the previous section, we defined circular motion. The simplest case of circular motion is uniform circular motion , where an object travels a circular path at a constant speed. Note that, unlike speed, the linear velocity of an object in circular motion is constantly changing because it is always changing direction.

Simple harmonic motion

A peg a cylinder of wood is attached to a vertical disk, rotating with a constant angular frequency. If a lamp is placed above the disk and peg, the peg produces a shadow. If the disk turns at the proper angular frequency, the shadow follows along with the block. The position of the shadow can be modeled with the equation. Recall that the block attached to the spring does not move at a constant velocity. The peg lies at the tip of the radius, a distance A from the center of the disk.

Figure 1. The horses on this merry-go-round exhibit uniform circular motion. Figure 2. There is an easy way to produce simple harmonic motion by using uniform circular motion. A ball is attached to a uniformly rotating vertical turntable, and its shadow is projected on the floor as shown. The shadow undergoes simple harmonic motion. So observing the projection of uniform circular motion, as in Figure 2, is often easier than observing a precise large-scale simple harmonic oscillator.

There is an easy way to produce simple harmonic motion by using uniform circular motion. Figure 2 shows one way of using this method. A ball is attached to a.

Applications of Harmonic Motion
