What Is Paint Made of?

Paint is used to decorate, protect and prolong the life of natural and synthetic materials, and acts as a barrier against environmental conditions. Paints may be broadly classified into Decorative paints, applied on site to decorate and protect buildings and other objects, and Industrial coatings which are applied in factories to finish manufactured goods such as cars. The binder resin and solvent together are sometimes known as the vehicle. The binder may be dissolved as a solution or carried as a dispersion of microscopically small particles in a liquid. Paints are formulated according to their proposed use - primer, undercoat, special finishes matt, gloss, heat resistance, anti-corrosion, abrasion resistance.

Different types and grades of paint provide different application and resistance properties, depending upon the kinds and levels of ingredients used to create the paint. In turn, the properties of a paint determine the general quality of the coating. Pigments are finely ground particles or powders that are dispersed in paints, provide color and hiding; and some are used to impart bulk at relatively low cost. The binder affects application properties like flow, leveling and film build, and gloss development. Pigments and the binder are what are left on a surface when the paint dries and the liquid portion evaporates.

What is in a can of paint

It is a volatile liquid used to obtain desired viscosity and flow of the paint. It keeps the solid components of paint in suspension and also influences the adhesion properties of the surface. It is an optional component of paint i. The solvent after application of paint evaporates to leave a solid dry film on the surface. The most common solvents used in architectural paints are water and mineral spirits. Water is used in acrylic paints both interior and exterior while mineral spirits are used in oil based paints. It is one of the most important and necessary components of paint.

General Industrial Paint Components

In our summer educational series on paint and color technology, we begin with a review of one of the basics: what ingredients are in paint? The variety of paint products offered can be overwhelming. And with each variety of paint offering different properties that affect the outcome of a design project, understanding what's in a can of paint is key to success. All paints generally have four main ingredients -- pigments, binders, solvents liquids and additives.

Paint is any pigmented liquid , liquefiable, or solid mastic composition that, after application to a substrate in a thin layer, converts to a solid film. It is most commonly used to protect, color, or provide texture to objects. Paint can be made or purchased in many colors—and in many different types, such as watercolor or synthetic. Paint is typically stored, sold, and applied as a liquid, but most types dry into a solid.

To improve your ability to pick the right paint for the right space, it helps to understand what goes into the product.

2. Binder / Vehicle / Resin

Paint has to be one of the most common but underappreciated substances ever invented. There is nothing in your life that is not in some way affected by paint. We put paint on our walls, our appliances, and on the hood of our cars, to protect these valuable surfaces. Paint comes in thousands of different types, purposes, and colors, and line distributor shelves by the hundreds. Even chemists and chemical engineers who design and experiment with advanced paint formulas realize paint composition can be extremely complicated.
