The image on the far left is a clip from a topographic elevation map, the image in the middle is an infrared aerial photo, and the image on the right is the geologic interpretation of surface sediments and geomorphology. This location is interesting because it contains elements of a natural and human altered physical environment. The lake in the image, coded blue in the topographic and geology map, and black in the infrared aerial photo was formed by artificial damming a stream the flows through this landscape.

Geomorphology is the study of landforms, their processes, form and sediments at the surface of the Earth and sometimes on other planets. Study includes looking at landscapes to work out how the earth surface processes, such as air, water and ice, can mould the landscape. Landforms are produced by erosion or deposition, as rock and sediment is worn away by these earth-surface processes and transported and deposited to different localities. The different climatic environments produce different suites of landforms.

Geomorphology is the study of the Earth's diverse physical land surface features and the dynamic processes that shape these features. Examining natural and anthropogenic processes, The SAGE Handbook of Geomorphology is a comprehensive exposition of the fundamentals of geomorphology that examines form, process, and history in the discipline. Geomorphology emerged as a scientific discipline in the latter part of the 19th century, and rapidly developed from the early 20th century under the dual influence of its parent disciplines, geology and geography. Geomorphology, as a science, has moved beyond description to yield explanations and predictions of landform change, but as a relatively young discipline marked by rapid development from different origins, it is perhaps not surprising that the subject has been characterized by multiple, often competing, methods and perspectives. In this chapter, the nature of explanation in geomorphology as it has evolved over the 20th century is examined, and connections are made between the objects and objectives of geomorphological enquiry, Have you created a personal profile? Geomorphology and Society

Geomorphology is the study of landforms and landscapes, including the description, classifiation, origin, development, and history of planetar surfaces. Unfortunately, physiography also became synonymouswith physical geography, and the concept became embroiled in controversy surrounding the appropriate concerns of that discipline. In the second half of the twentieth century, the study of regional-scale geomorphology -the original physiography- was generally neglected. Russell attributed the decline of physiography to its elaborate terminology and to its detachment from evidence acquired by other disciplines, chiefly geology. In the exploration of planetary surfaces by various space missions, the perspective of regional geomorphology has been the required starting point for scientific inquiry. This book deals with the relationship between geomorphology and society. In this text the authors aim to bring together conceptual issues and case studies of how geomorphology influences society and, indeed, how society is in turn influenced by geomorphology. Geomorphology

Geomorphologists seek to understand why landscapes look the way they do, to understand landform and terrain history and dynamics and to predict changes through a combination of field observations, physical experiments and numerical modeling. Geomorphologists work within disciplines such as physical geography , geology , geodesy , engineering geology , archaeology , climatology and geotechnical engineering. This broad base of interests contributes to many research styles and interests within the field. Earth 's surface is modified by a combination of surface processes that shape landscapes, and geologic processes that cause tectonic uplift and subsidence , and shape the coastal geography. Surface processes comprise the action of water , wind , ice , fire , and living things on the surface of the Earth, along with chemical reactions that form soils and alter material properties, the stability and rate of change of topography under the force of gravity , and other factors, such as in the very recent past human alteration of the landscape. Many of these factors are strongly mediated by climate.
