All the multivolume novels with their sad and amusing intricacies, all the edifying and meditative, scholarly and unscholarly Bible commentaries — and novels and books of edification are the two staples of English literature — all these you may with an easy conscience leave unread.

In the preceding Book Carlyle has been talking of the twelfth century i. In this Book he talks of the Present and its most outstanding fact, namely the Modern Worker or the rise of Labour. The social order is impossible without religion because justice and honesty of an individual do not arise from socio-economic order but from religion.

Past and Present is a book by Thomas Carlyle. It combines medieval history with criticism of 19th-century British society. Carlyle wrote it in seven weeks as a respite from the harassing labor of writing Cromwell. He was inspired by the recently published Chronicles of the Abbey of Saint Edmund's Bury , which had been written by Jocelin of Brakelond at the close of the 12th century. This account of a medieval monastery had taken Carlyle's fancy, and he drew upon it in order to contrast the monks' reverence for work and heroism with the sham leadership of his own day. Carlyle expresses his ideas about the Condition of England question in an elevated rhetorical style invoking classical allusions such as Midas and the Sphinx and fictional caricatures such as Bobus and Sir Jabesh Windbag. Carlyle complains that despite England's abundant resources, the poor are starving and unable to find meaningful work, as evinced by the Manchester Insurrection.

Past and Present does not simply analyze the condition of England, it represents that condition by depicting the various factions that make up English society in much the same way that The French Revolution had dramatized the voices of conflicting factions. Through dialogue between the prophetic author and the factions dividing English society, Carlyle imagines the conversion of his contemporaries and the emergence of a new era.

PRESENT. THOMAS CARLYLE, PDF document may approach facsimile status, it requires the City past or present, what a lamblike Insurrection!—.

Past and Present (1843) by Thomas Carlyle
