Carbon moves into and through forest ecosystems, playing important roles in ecological processes and management of carbon emissions and removals. Over the past four decades, forests have moderated climate change by absorbing about one-quarter of the carbon emitted by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation that converts forests to other land uses. Carbon uptake by forests reduces the rate at which carbon accumulates in the atmosphere and thus reduces the rate at which climate change occurs. Essentially, to reduce climate change, we need to do two things: emit less carbon and other greenhouse gases and remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. How well we can manage forests to remove some of the carbon now being emitted by human activities will affect the future rate of carbon increase in the atmosphere. Since the industrial use of fossil fuels began, the net carbon balance has resulted in increases in the atmospheric CO2 concentration from parts per million to over parts per million.
Carbon storage is one method used to offset carbon emissions in the form of carbon dioxide CO 2 , which is suspected to increase global warming. The advantage of forests providing these new ecosystem services versus other systems, such as algae farms for energy, or underground storage tanks for carbon dioxide, is that our forests provide other amenities that alternative carbon storage systems do not provide, such as clean air and water, wildlife habitat especially for threatened and endangered species , protection from soil erosion, wood products, and recreation for humans. Finally, these new ecosystem services will reward forest landowners with increased revenue opportunities for their forestland and keep local economies strong. New market trading platforms, government regulations, and financial incentives are emerging with the goal to reduce CO 2 emitted to the atmosphere. Entities that emit CO 2 are required in some situations to turn around and sequester CO 2 out of the atmosphere in order to remain carbon neutral, or pay for this sequestered service from another entity. Currently, there is no overreaching transfer mechanism in place to trade CO 2 credits from storers to emitters.
Biomass and Remote Sensing of Biomass. Climate change is a topic that has been widely discussed and debated over recent decades. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC reported that a gradual but accelerating increase of atmospheric greenhouse gases has occurred since as result of human activities and among the anthropogenic greenhouse gases, CO 2 is the most important. The global atmospheric concentration of CO 2 has increased from a pre-industrial value of about ppm to ppm in Alley et al. Temperature has risen by about 0. If CO 2 emissions were maintained at levels, its concentration would increase to about ppm by the end of the 21 st century Chakraborty et al.
Did you know? Forests are found throughout the country and contain more than species of trees. Although significant regional changes have occurred, the total area of forestland has been fairly stable for the past years. Fifty-eight percent of U. The other 42 percent is under the control of federal, state and local governments. Ownership patterns vary by region, with private ownership dominating in the North and South and public ownership dominating in the Rocky Mountains and Alaska. The U.
Carbon Sequestration in Forest Ecosystems is a comprehensive book describing the basic processes of carbon dynamics in forest ecosystems, their contribution to carbon sequestration and implications for mitigating abrupt climate change. This book provides the information on processes, factors and causes influencing carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems. Drawing upon most up-to-date references, this book summarizes the current understanding of carbon sequestration processes in forest ecosystems while identifying knowledge gaps for future research, Thus, this book is a valuable knowledge source for students, scientists, forest managers and policy makers. Accordingly, the authors are able to fill an important gap between the needs of global environmental policy and local forest management. It will perform a significant task in academic teaching … also in stimulating the dialog between different groups in policy, science, and practical land management! Twenty color plates … provide visual understanding of selected issues. A valuable resource for readers seeking fundamental knowledge and guidance in managing forests for carbon sequestration.
Kaul, M. Global climate change is a widespread and growing concern that has led to extensive international discussions and negotiations. Responses to this concern have focused on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, and on measuring carbon absorbed by and stored in forests and soils. Forests are a significant part of the global carbon cycle. The amount of carbon stored, however, changes over time as forests grow and mature.
The amounts of carbon stored in soils and vegetation in Britain, and the potential of forestry to influence, whether soils act as sinks or sources, are discussed. Soils are estimated to contain c. Some 86 per cent of the soil carbon is present in peats and peaty-surfaced soils, mainly in north-west Britain. Soil carbon content is strongly related to climate and altitude.
Researchers have been analyzing the costs of carbon sequestration for approximately twelve years. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the carbon sequestration cost studies of the past dozen years that have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of the forestry option. Several conclusions emerge. While carbon sequestration cost studies all contain essentially the same components they are not comparable on their face due to the inconsistent use of terms, geographic scope, assumptions, program definitions, and methods. This difference in carbon accounting further complicates comparison of studies.
