Reviews Outside Literature, by Tony Bennett;? Outside Literature is a disappointing sequel to Tony Bennett's stimulating first book, Formalism and Marxism It deals with an important subject—the "institutions" that organize and regulate the "discourses" of literature, culture, and pedagogy—and contains adroit scrutinies of a number ofimportant theorists. This paper examines the role of the historical sciences natural history, ethnology, archaeology and geology in late-nineteenth-century programmes of liberal government.
Why, over this period, did the historical sciences suggest Why, over this period, did the historical sciences suggest themselves as useful for governing? Why were they accorded such importance within the civic and public education strategies of museums? Why and how did they come to eclipse the role that had earlier been accorded to art in these regards?
It is argued that the answers to these questions consist in the intersection between three discursive events: first, the importance of Darwin's work in fashioning a version of nature that could be adapted to liberal programmes of social reform; second, the new disciplinary synthesis of geology, archaeology, natural history and ethnology which dominated the intellectual horizons of the late nineteenth century and which provided a new set of intersecting historical horizons within which to govern the conduct of individuals and populations; and, third, the changing problematics of late-nineteenth-century liberalism.
The argument is developed by reviewing the changing emphases and priorities of museum practices in Britain, Australia and the USA. Culture, History, Habit more. In terms of its intellectual characteristics, it is suggested that cultural studies is distinguished by a number of traits regarding its approaches to the analysis of the role of culture in relations of power and subjectivity.
The article concludes by considering the qualities that have most distinguished Australian cultural studies, placing the stress on its strong feminist orientations, its contributions to our understanding of the relations between culture and nation, and its role in connecting cultural studies to the concerns of cultural policy.

Only a careless inattention could support such a conclusion. From his early interventions in French cultural policy debates up to and including The Rules of Art and Pascalian Meditations , Bourdieu has consistently repudiated the view that a sociological approach to questions of aesthetic judgment must result in a levelling form of relativism. It does so with a view to identifying some of the difficulties underlying his understanding of sociology as a historical practice.

By literary theory we refer not to the meaning of a work of literature but to the theories that reveal what literature can mean. Literary theory is a description of the underlying principles, one might say the tools, by which we attempt to understand literature. All literary interpretation draws on a basis in theory but can serve as a justification for very different kinds of critical activity.

First published in , Tony Bennetts Formalism and Marxism created its own reverberations by offering a ground-breaking new interpretation of the Formalists achievements and demanding a new way forward in Marxist criticism. Placing the work of key figures in context and addressing such issues as aesthetics, linguistics and the category of literature, form and function or literary evolution, Bennett argues that the Formalists concerns provided the basis for a radically historical approach to the study of literature. Addressing such crucial questions as What is literature?
